What Your Trans Daughter Wants For Christmas

Unfortunately, the holiday season is a rough time for countless LGBTQ adults, teens, and kids. They are often thrust into situations where they are uncomfortable, and even in danger. Many LGBTQ people don’t have family to spend the holidays with because they are either unsupportive or have disowned them.

I have put together a list of things your trans daughter probably wants for Christmas, but feel free to get her these things any time after Christmas. You don’t have to be another unsupportive parent in this world. Having your trans daughter’s back makes a world of difference.

Your unconditional love and support

Studies show that trans people with a strong support system are less likely to take their own lives. If your child confides in you about thoughts of being transgender, it is crucial that you don’t push them away or brush off their concerns. Even if you don’t know the first thing about transgender, make a mental note to do some research yourself later on. Be there for your child. It is hard enough being different in a world where society wants to fit everyone in a certain box. If you condemn your child for bein trans, you’re making their world that much colder.

A Listening Ear

LGBTQ people in general face a lot of hate. It is illegal to be LGBTQ in various countries. Some are even killed simply for being who they are. When your child comes to you, they need you to listen. They need for you to be there with an open mind and outstretched hands. Even if you’re not completely sure what they’re talking about, just actively listen to them. Words can’t describe how much this simple gesture means to them.

A Trans Flag

When I got my trans flag it was my way of showing my pride in being trans. I had finally admitted to myself that I was trans and was growing more and more comfortable with the fact. I got my trans flag from Amazon for about $5. They’re not expensive at all, and they come in all shapes and sizes. If your trans daughter wants to hang her on her wall like a big flag, get a huge one. If she wants a small one she can hold in her hand during a pride event, they have those too.

Female Clothing & Shoes

This is a big one. Once your child confides in you about thoughts concerning their gender identity, it’s could be time for a new wardrobe. Your child might have already persuaded you to let them get some clothes from the girls or women's section (depending on her age). If so, then this one is easy.

Transitioning from men's to women's clothing can be tricky, but in most clothing store there are dressing rooms. Be patient and let them pick out a few outfits they love. It’ll go a long way in helping them feel like themselves.

If they want to shop online, you might want to let them try on some things at a clothing store first just to be sure of their size to avoid having to return items. Lots of clothing websites host lots of sales, so watch for those.

The things I listed are based off my own personal experience. Being trans isn’t a “one size fits all” thing.  Women's clothing doesn’t make all of us want to escape our own skin. It just depends on your child. I hope this list was helpful, but communication is the most important thing. Your trans daughter can tell you exactly what she wants more than my list ever will.
