Helping the LGBT Community in Their Home For too many of the estimated  3 million  lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans aged 55 and older, fear of stigma and judgment creates barriers to health care. At the same time, these individuals face greater health risks as they age, according to  SAGE  (Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Elders). Older LGBT Americans are also more likely than their non-LGBT peers to feel vulnerable and isolated. The home care industry is ideally positioned to bridge this gap in care for older LGBT adults. We are committed to helping vulnerable, isolated people remain safe, connected and on the path to health in the place most Americans say they want to grow old: at home. We also care for people in the midst of their day-to-day lives — in their homes, rather than in a doctors’ office or hospital — and attend to more than just physical symptoms. Transgender Rights ... Is it enough? At the Franklin High School graduation back in June 2014, all the boys wore blue gowns and all the girls wore white gowns, as per tradition. The exception was one girl who, uncomfortable with her gender, sought out permission to wear a blue gown and did so. Then at the 2015 graduation, many girls were wearing blue and a few boys were wearing white. The previous Fall, Franklin High School found itself wrapped up in a debate whether or not to change the graduation robe tradition. The Gay Straight Alliance’s goal was so that all students would wear one color. The purpose was, as one student put it, “really the idea is just that we don’t have students singled out and made uncomfortable on what’s supposed to be a happy occasion”. Others opposing the change argued that keeping two gown colors based on gender was a matter of tradition and that the needs of a minority should not be able to overpower the interests of the majority. After last week's really long post I was and am mentally exhausted so this week is rather short and sweet ... Transgenderism and Christianity Transgender individuals believe that their gender identity does not correlate with the sex they were born with. Christians believe God is all omnipotent and does not make mistakes. These two ideas go together about as well as cats and dogs. But why all the hate? Well, for a lot of transgender people, I’m sure they could point to specific instances of Christians being hateful, maybe even cruel to them personally. Sadly, it’s a reality that some people professing Christianity can be exceedingly hateful. This is antithetical to authentic Christianity. I will understand if you want to pause and go to the bathroom or get a snack or both. Let's go. If there is a rock bottom, we have yet to find it. Why? We are still falling. Transgender and gender diverse Americans have never had a safe passage in greater society. We had one of two choices: We could chose to push forward on the only path available to us, riddle with weeds, thorns and mountainous obstacles in order to simply thrive in spite of the condition… or, we could be consumed by overwhelming emotions of self defeat, conditioned self-hatred and slip into a sense of despair few ever fully recover from. It is that hopelessness that has cost many people on the trans spectrum their lives....
