Why all the hate?
After last week's really long post I was and am
mentally exhausted so this week is rather short and sweet ...
Transgenderism and Christianity
Transgender individuals believe that their gender
identity does not correlate with the sex they were born with. Christians
believe God is all omnipotent and does not make mistakes. These two ideas go
together about as well as cats and dogs. But why all the hate?
Well, for a lot of transgender people, I’m sure they
could point to specific instances of Christians being hateful, maybe even cruel
to them personally. Sadly, it’s a reality that some people professing
Christianity can be exceedingly hateful. This is antithetical to authentic
Christianity. In the Bible, Jesus (The Christian Messiah) says in Mark 12:30–31
that the two most important commandments are this. “Love the Lord your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your
strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no
commandment greater than these.” it doesn’t leave much room for cruelty or
hatred. It also does not make any reference to the gender identity of your
neighbor.
The transgender community also has responsibility to
take in this relationship. If affirmation is your highest value, you will never
get along with Christians. Christians believe God is flawless, meaning he
created you flawlessly in your original form. It’s a beautiful sentiment, even
if you disagree with it. Christians’ communication of this sentiment often
leaves much to be desired. Christians can not affirm you. It’s an act of hate
on your part to try to force them to.
So what’s the solution? How can the transgender community and Christians peacefully co-exist? The answer is simple. Love your neighbor as yourself. Respectfully disagree and see each other as individuals, not idealogy. Most of all love each other. Whether you believe in Jesus or not, he was an intelligent guy. “Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you.” These are more words spoken by him. If we follow those words, we might find ourselves living in a better world.
