ERASING LOVE IN A GENDERLESS SOCIETY
A Dual Gender Short Story
I remember the day I first saw Zael, or as I later came to know them, Alexander. Our society had no concept of gender; we were all simply human, existing without the constraints of male or female roles.
Our society was genderless. Any expression of either male or female was not only frowned upon, but dealt with in the harshest of manners.
Choosing to identify as either gender was a crime that would lead to dire consequences. We were taught to blend, to be one with everyone else, so we could all live in harmony. This world was built on the foundation of unity, a place where the line between individuals was meant to blur, but the irony of it all was that it left many of us feeling isolated.
Feelings to be your true self, either male or female was sacrilege. But truth has a way of expressing itself.
I was at the park that day, feeling the warm sun on my face as I absorbed the beauty of nature around me. The trees swayed gently in the breeze, and the scent of flowers filled the air. I walked along the path, lost in thought when I noticed Zael sitting under a tree, reading a book. There was something about them that caught my attention, an aura that pulled me in, and a feeling deep within my soul that we shared a connection.
I approached them cautiously, not knowing how to start a conversation. I felt a mixture of excitement and fear, the latter stemming from the realization that if we were to reveal our innermost selves, we could face severe punishment. Zael looked up from their book, and our eyes met. A spark ignited between us, and we knew we shared something special.
"Hi, I'm Renn," I said, offering my society name.
"Zael," they replied, their voice like a secret melody.
As we spent more time together, we learned that we both harbored hidden desires to embrace our true selves. I felt a profound connection to femininity and chose the name Isabella, while Zael identified with masculinity and embraced the name Alexander. We were both fearful of the consequences, but our love grew stronger, and we vowed to protect each other.
We would meet in hidden corners of the city, away from prying eyes. Our conversations were filled with passion, dreams, and the simple joy of being with one another. We would share our hopes for a future where we could be free to express our true selves without fear. Each stolen moment together brought us closer, weaving our souls into a beautiful tapestry of love.
"Isabella," Alexander would say, his voice trembling with emotion, "I have never felt so alive."
"And I, Alexander, have never known such happiness," I would reply.
We reveled in stolen moments, sharing tender embraces and secret rendezvous, exploring our love and our true selves. But the ever-present danger of discovery haunted us, and we knew that one day our love might be torn apart.
We tried to be careful, but love has a way of making us reckless. Our meetings became more frequent, our whispered conversations more daring. We would leave small tokens for each other, symbols of our love that only we could understand. And though we knew the risks, we could not help but be swept away by the powerful current of our love.
That fateful day came when I returned home to find our sanctuary desecrated, and Alexander gone. My heart ached as I learned that they had been captured and taken to a psych ward to erase their gender identity. the dreaded reconditioning treatment. I was devastated, knowing that our love had been shattered by a society that refused to understand.
I visited Alexander when they returned, hoping to find a spark of the person I had fallen in love with. But the person who stood before me was a stranger, their spark gone, erased, their eyes hollow and empty. Our love had been stolen from us, and we were left with the echoes of a life we could no longer share.
As I sat alone, mourning the love we had lost, I could not help but wonder if there would ever be a place for us – a place where love could triumph over fear, and where we could be free to embrace our true selves. The world seemed so vast and yet, at the same time, so small and confining. It felt as if the walls around us had grown taller and more impenetrable.
I would wander the streets of the city, lost in thought, wondering if there were others like us out there. Were there more souls hiding behind society's masks, longing for the freedom to be themselves? And if there were, how could we find each other and break the chains that held us captive?
Despite the pain, I could not let go of the love that Alexander and I had shared. It became a beacon in the darkness, a testament to the power of love to transcend the boundaries imposed upon us. I vowed to honor our love by seeking out others like us, to share our story and give hope to those who felt as we had.
Slowly, I began to find others who shared our secret desires. We formed a hidden community, bound by our longing for a world where love could flourish without fear. Together, we worked in secret, creating safe spaces where we could be ourselves, even if only for a fleeting moment.
As our community grew, so too did our determination to change the world around us. We knew that it would not be easy, that the path ahead was filled with challenges and heartache. But we had each other, and we had our love – a love that could withstand the storm, a love that could change the world.
Through our secret meetings and whispered conversations, we began to envision a new world – a world where love could exist without boundaries, where everyone could be free to express their true selves. We shared stories of our love, of the joy and the pain, and we drew strength from one another.
I will never forget the love I shared with Alexander, the stolen moments that brought us together, and the cruel hand of fate that tore us apart. But I also know that our love was not in vain, that it was a beacon of hope in a world that desperately needed it.
And so, I continue to fight, to carry the torch of our love and to work toward a future where we can all be free. For in a world where love can bloom without fear, we can truly become one – not by erasing our differences, but by embracing them and celebrating the unique and beautiful tapestry they create.

Can you identify with any of this story? We often are driven to hide our true feelings in order to blend into what society says is normal or in this story's case, harmony. But is that really the best way to live the limited years you have left?
You owe those around you that truly love you to be the greatest, loving, caring, compassionate, authentic you that you can be.
Don't be overly concerned about the opinions of others. Ask yourself, If you died today, who would come to your wake? Who would cry? If it rained, who would find an excuse to skip the burial? So why do you care what "they" think. They're just passing through.
